Building Numeracy with Middle Grades Students (5-8) - London, KY - Erron Prickett (2023-24)
7/12/2023 - 1/16/2024
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM EST

Event Description
Are your middle school students struggling with mathematical reasoning? Look no further! You have found a professional development course to support your efforts. The resources and training provided during the KCM's "Building Numeracy with Middle Grades Students" course will empower you to take student learning and understanding to the next level.

COURSE TITLE: Building Numeracy with Middle Grades Students (5-8)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students often struggle to further their mathematical thinking from the intermediate grades to the rigors of middle school. But when students develop their numeracy skills and grow their toolbox of mathematical reasoning strategies, they increase their confidence to do sophisticated mathematics. During this hybrid course, teachers will explore the power of representations, problems strings, and the use of reasoning strategies to develop numeracy, proportional reasoning, and algebraic thinking in their middle school students.

In this course, participants will:
* learn teaching strategies for helping students develop the multiplicative and proportional reasoning needed for middle school math.
* be provided with games such as 24 Game and manipulatives such as Cuisenaire Rods to develop numeracy through modeling number and quantitative relationships.
* explore Desmos activities designed to illuminate key ratio and proportion concepts.
* receive several books including Building Powerful Numeracy for Middle and High School Students, Lessons and Activities for Building Powerful Numeracy, Figuring Out Fluency, and Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally

Please note:
This is a 5-Session HYBRID course:
* The first 2 sessions are full-day, in-person sessions that meet in July
* The last 3 sessions are half-day virtual sessions that will meet via ZOOM on school days.
* Participants should not be working with students during the half-day virtual sessions and should obtain a half-day sub for those 3 sessions if necessary.

Please email the KCM at kcm@nku.edu or call us at 859-572-7690 if you need that change made.

The $200 registration fee is non-refundable once materials are ordered. If you register and then become unable to attend for any reason, your school or district may send someone else to attend in your place. Regardless of whether or not a replacement is sent, the course invoice will still need to be paid.
