8/21/23 UPDATE: The KCM is pleased to announce that we have added additional spots to this course. We had closed this course because it was full, but are now accepting additional registrations. To accommodate the participant demand for this course, we added a co-facilitator and have verified the meeting space can comfortably hold 40 participants.
Do your students struggle to make sense of fractions and fraction operations? Manipulatives and rich tasks provide students with the tools and experiences to see fractions as numbers and make sense of fraction operations. Join the KCM in a deep dive into fractions that will change how you think about and teach fraction operations!
COURSE TITLE: Explorations in 4th & 5th Grade Fractions
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Too often fractions are considered scary or difficult. But fractions are numbers! By helping students to understand that fractions are numbers that expand our number system, we can help them connect their understanding of whole number operations to fraction operations.
During this 3-day course, teachers will:
* explore instructional strategies such as the use of manipulatives, fraction models (including number lines) and rich tasks that help students see fractions as numbers and understand fraction operations.
* deepen their understanding of the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics, particularly the grades 4 and 5 fractions standards, seeing them as part of a progression starting in first grade and continuing into middle school. * receive ready-to-use materials and manipulatives, including Pattern blocks, Cuisenaire Rods, books and games.
COST: $300 per participant DATES:
1) Wednesday, November 8, 2023
2) Thursday, November 9, 2023
3) Thursday, January 25, 2024. TIME: 9 am - 4 pm Eastern LOCATION: Louisville, KY
University of Louisville Conference Center, ShelbyHurst Campus, 450 N Whittington Pkwy, Louisville, KY 40222
Days 1 & 2 = BURHANS HALL, Room 207
Day 3 = FOUNDERS UNION BUILDING, Room 136B
Registration closes on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Participants must register by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, October 4, in order to attend.
Registration limit for this course is 25 participants. Once that limit is reached, the KCM will be unable to accept any additional participants.
Because participants may register during the 2022-23 fiscal school year, but this course meets during the 2023-24 fiscal school year, the KCM can change the date on any invoice if needed to be July 3, 2023. Please email the KCM at kcm@nku.edu or call us at 859-572-7690 if you need that change made.
The $300 registration fee is non-refundable once materials are ordered. If you register and then become unable to attend for any reason, your school or district may send someone else to attend in your place. Regardless of whether or not a replacement is sent, the course invoice will still need to be paid.
Information regarding Purchase Orders and KCM Invoices:
* You may register for any KCM course without a PO; however, please note that many Kentucky school districts require you obtain a PO before they will pay the invoice. Please obtain a PO if one is required by your school or district.
* Only the registered participant will be emailed a copy of the course invoice. It is the participant's responsibility to forward that invoice on to the appropriate person at their school or district for payment.
* Participants may ask that a copy of their invoice be emailed to another email address; contact the KCM at 859-572-7690 or kcm@nku.edu.
* KCM Invoices are not mailed.
* Payment is greatly appreciated prior to the course start date, and must be paid as soon as the course is finished.
